Pilgrim said, "Nonsense!
Two characters, and the whole of the rebuttal. Tripitaka dismissed Pilgrim below the city wall with the near-identical 胡說; this is its twin with the second character changed, and the rebuke now travels the other way down the order.
"Monks break no laws. What should they take us for?"
和 is hé in 和尚, a monk — the first of two occurrences in this passage of a character that turns up in the seasonings a line later.
"We shall walk on past and go to the Zheng family's shop and buy some seasonings."
調 is tiáo again. This is the third time the errand has been repeated intact, and repeating it is how the narrative keeps the pretext alive while nobody acts on it.
Pilgrim answers a practical fear with a point of principle, which is his method all through this chapter. Eight Rules said they might be arrested; Pilgrim replies that they have done nothing to be arrested for, as though those were the same question.
He is also, of course, lying about where they are going. The Zheng family's shop is real and the directions to it were good, and he has no intention of ever reaching it.
