Pilgrim said, "Very well then. Stand here at the foot of this wall, and when I have gone across and bought and come back, I shall buy you plain noodles and baked cakes to eat."

is the weak ba here, the suggestion — matching 買些用罷 and not the tripled interjection of the previous passage.

The Idiot handed the bowl and dish over to Pilgrim, propped his snout against the foot of the wall, turned his face away and would not stir for anything.

is the weak zhe at both sites, against the zhuó it took at 著然 in the food list. is jiāng, pushing the bowl and dish in front of the handing over. 死也不動 — he would not stir though he died for it.

總評 Commentary

Pilgrim gets exactly what he wanted, and it costs him one more promise. Noodles and cakes are now owed on top of everything described at the guest house, and none of it will be bought.

The last image is the best in the chapter so far: a pig-headed monster propping his snout against a wall with his face turned away, refusing to look at a street — obedient, sulking and immovable in the same posture.

死也不動 is what the whole sequence has been building towards, and it is about to become a problem. He has been left holding nothing and standing still in a city where a crowd is gathering.
