六道輪迴 The Six Paths of Rebirth

Going forward a long while, they came to the place of the Six Paths of Rebirth.

六道輪迴 (liùdào lúnhuí) the Six Paths of transmigration, along which every soul is reborn according to its deeds.

又yòu見jiàn那nà騰téng雲yún的de，身shēn披pī霞xiá帔pèi；受shòu籙lù的de，腰yāo掛guà金jīn魚yú。又yòu见jiàn那nà腾téng云yún的de，身shēn披pī霞xiá帔pèi；受shòu箓lù的de，腰yāo挂guà金jīn鱼yú。

There he saw beings mounting the clouds, robed in rosy cloud-capes; and others who had received the registers, with golden fish-tallies at their waists.

霞帔 (xiá pèi) a cape of rose-colored cloud, the garb of an ascended immortal. 受籙 to receive the Daoist registers of ordination; 金魚 the golden fish-shaped tally of rank.

Monks and nuns, Daoists and laymen, running beasts and flying birds, sprites and goblins — all in a ceaseless stream rushed beneath the Wheel of Rebirth, each entering upon its own path.

魑魅魍魎 (chī mèi wǎng liǎng) the various demon-sprites of hill and marsh. 滔滔 in an unceasing flood. 都 dōu.

The magistrate said, 'Your Majesty, of clear mind and discerning nature, must surely remember this and make it known to the people of the world of light:'

明心見性 'to clarify the mind and perceive one's nature,' a Chan Buddhist phrase for enlightened insight. Again the emperor is charged to bear witness.

'This is called the Six Paths of Rebirth: those who do good ascend transformed onto the path of immortals; the wholly loyal rise reborn onto the noble path; the filial are reborn onto the path of blessings; the fair-dealing return to life onto the path of men; the accumulators of virtue are reborn onto the path of wealth; and the vicious sink down onto the path of ghosts.'

那 here demonstrative, nà, 'those (who).' 昇化 to ascend and be transformed. 行 xíng, 'to practice'; 盡忠 jìn. 還生 huán shēng, to return to life. The six paths — celestial, noble, blessed, human, wealthy, ghostly — are moralized, each rebirth matched to a virtue or a vice.

總評 Commentary

The Wheel of the Six Paths gives the chapter its cosmological climax, an ordered vision in which every category of being — immortals, monks, beasts, demons — funnels into the rebirths its conduct has earned. The magistrate's gloss reduces the vast machinery to a plain moral scheme: good deeds, loyalty, filiality, fairness, and merit each open a higher path, while wickedness alone sinks to the path of ghosts. Delivered with the charge to publish it, the teaching makes explicit the didactic purpose of the entire underworld journey.
