That day, the sky already growing dark, the ministers asked the king to retire, and each and all withdrew.
歸寢 is to go to bed. 散訖, sàn qì, is dispersed and finished. After the most extraordinary day in the dynasty's history, everyone goes home.
A brief coda closes the day of the resurrection. Night falls, the court disperses, the emperor is put to bed.
The single sentence marks the pause between the drama of the return and the resumption of imperial business the following morning — and the flatness is the joke: nothing whatever is said about the fact that the man being helped to his room was dead this morning.
