The reviewing officials took the prisoners of the Board of Punishments condemned to strangling and beheading, and found upon examination some four hundred and more, whom they submitted for report.

Taizong released them to go home, to take leave of their parents and brothers and entrust their property to kinsmen and nephews — and to present themselves before the court on this same day next year, still to receive the punishment due.

子姪 zǐ zhí, sons and nephews. 應得之罪 the punishment one deserves; 應 yīng. A striking clemency: the condemned are freed on their honor to return for sentence.

The prisoners gave thanks and withdrew. He further issued a proclamation for the relief of orphans, and, finding some three thousand palace women, young and old, decreed that they be given out in marriage to the soldiery. From this time, within the court and without, all was good.

恤孤 to relieve orphans. 綵女 palace serving-women. 配軍 to bestow in marriage upon soldiers — the release of the immured palace women, an act of merit. 中 zhōng.

總評 Commentary

The emperor discharges the moral debt of his reprieve through a cascade of merciful acts: a general amnesty, relief for orphans, and the release of three thousand palace women to marriage. The most arresting is the parole of four hundred condemned prisoners, freed to settle their affairs and trusted to return for execution — a gesture that, in the historical record and in the novel alike, becomes a byword for the ruler's virtue and his subjects' answering honor.
