The storyteller's sign-off: 「且聽下回分解」 — listen to the next instalment, and it will be explained. Every chapter of the novel ends this way, a fossil of the days when the audience was in a room rather than holding a book, and the man telling the story wanted them back tomorrow. 還魂 is huán hún.
The chapter ends on the conventional hook, holding over the return of Liu Quan and Li Cuilian — and the consternation the borrowed body is about to cause — for the chapter that follows.
With Taizong restored, the underworld debts paid, and the Grand Mass promised, the ground is laid for the great rite at which the journey to fetch the scriptures will finally be set in motion.
