Now Taizong, having taken the decoction to calm his spirit and settle his soul, and swallowed several bowls of gruel, was helped by his ministers into the bedchamber, where he slept soundly through the night and nursed his strength; only at daybreak did he rise, rouse his majestic bearing, and — see how he was arrayed:

安神定魄之劑 the soul-calming medicine of the previous passage. 抖擻威儀 to shake out and compose one's dignified bearing. The formula 你看他怎生打扮 introduces the descriptive rhapsody of the emperor's regalia.


總評 Commentary

A transitional passage carries the emperor from convalescent to sovereign: a night's sleep and a few bowls of gruel restore him, and at dawn he rises to resume his state. The set formula that closes it hands off to the rhapsody on his regalia, the visual signal that the emperor is himself again.
