The marshal took up a soul-guiding banner and went before to lead the way.

引魂旛 (yǐn hún fān) a 'soul-summoning pennant' for conducting spirits. 一首 here serves as a measure-word for the banner.

Magistrate Cui followed behind, guarding Taizong, and they passed straight out of the shadow-court.

保著 durative zhe, 'keeping guard over.' 幽司 the dark administration, the netherworld offices.

Taizong lifted his eyes and saw that this was not the road by which he had come, and asked the magistrate, 'Is this the wrong way?'

差矣 'is it in error?'; here chà, 'wrong.'

'Not wrong,' said the magistrate. 'It is so in the world of shade: there is a road out, but no road back.'

有去路,無來路 'a way to go, but no way to return' — the one-directional geography of the underworld.

'Now we send Your Majesty out by way of the Wheel of Transmigration — for one thing, to let you tour and behold the Land of Shades; for another, to set you toward rebirth and deliverance.'

轉輪藏 the revolving Wheel of Rebirth; zàng. 一則…一則 'on the one hand… on the other'; read . 轉托超生 to pass through rebirth toward deliverance.

Taizong could only follow the two of them as they led the way forward.

只得 , 'had no choice but to.' The route out doubles as the tour of hell that fills the passages to come.

總評 Commentary

The return is deliberately not the way in: the magistrate explains the underworld's one-way logic and reframes the tour of hell as at once sightseeing and a soteriological passage through the Wheel of Rebirth. The passage is a hinge, turning the chapter from the tribunal toward the long descriptive tour of the hells that follows.
