逐句解 Line by line
So flustered was the prefect that he dropped to his knees and lay flat on the ground. "Master, how do you know of something from three years ago?"
得 is neutral de here, the hinge that measures how far something went — flustered to the point of falling to his knees. In 得知 two words later the same character would take dé; the difference is whether it is joining a verb to its effect or forming a compound.
Pilgrim said, "That vegetarian offering set out for Heaven — how did you come to push it over and feed it to the dogs?
供 is gòng, the offering sense. 倒 is dǎo, to topple. Pilgrim is repeating the Jade Emperor's own account back at the man almost word for word — he took it in exactly.
"Tell me the truth of it."
實實, doubled, presses the word truly into something closer to every last bit of it. Four characters, and the interrogation is open.
The prefect's question is the right one and nobody answers it. How do you know about something from three years ago that I have told nobody?
What that question reveals is that he has been carrying this alone. Heaven knows, and now a monkey knows, and until this moment not one person in the prefecture had connected the drought to a bad afternoon in the prefect's own house.
