"Your worships might part the cloud and mist and each show your true form, so these mortals can see with their own eyes — then they will make their offerings with real faith."

供 is gòng, the offering sense. 真身, true body, is what a god looks like when not disguised or hidden. 信心 is faith in the ordinary religious sense, and Pilgrim's argument is frankly practical: people believe what they have seen.

眾zhòng神shén聽tīng說shuō,只zhǐ得dé都dōu停tíng在zài空kōng中zhōng。 众zhòng神shén听tīng说shuō,只zhǐ得dé都dōu停tíng在zài空kōng中zhōng。

Hearing this, the gods had no choice but to halt, all of them, up in the air.

只得, having no alternative, takes dé. The novel puts four departments of deities in exactly the position the Dragon King was in at the start of the chapter: unable to refuse a request from the Great Sage.

總評 Commentary

Pilgrim's reasoning is entirely pragmatic and slightly cynical, and it is also correct. Let them see you, and their offerings will be made in earnest.

It is a striking thing to say out loud in front of the gods concerned. Faith, on this account, needs evidence — and a prefecture that has just watched two thirds of its people starve is owed some. He is arranging proof.

And the gods cannot refuse him, which the novel notes drily. They had no choice.
