The Great Way runs deep and dark. What word could carry it? Say it plainly and the very spirits take fright.

The chapter opens not with a scene but with a song — and this is the one moment in the chapter where the storyteller drops the story and sings at you directly. Nothing in the manuscript marks it as verse, which is why it is easy to read straight past; the giveaway is the rhyme, four measures all closing on the same -ai sound. 大道 is the Way itself, the thing Laozi said could not be named without immediately ceasing to be the thing you meant. 消息 is worth pausing on: in modern Chinese it simply means news, a message, what you would read on your phone. Here it carries its older sense — word of something, a report from far off — and the line is asking how anything so vast could possibly be reported at all.

It holds the whole cosmos folded inside it; it splits open the dark radiance. No joy the world offers can match it.

here is cáng, to hold and hide away — and this is the only place in the chapter where the character is not part of Tripitaka's name, where it is read zàng instead. Fourteen of the fifteen are the monk; this one is the verb. 剖判 is the language of creation myths, the primal splitting that separated heaven from earth, and 玄光 is the dark light that supposedly shone before either existed. 無賽 means unmatched, with in its older sense of a contest — nothing in the world enters the race.

Before Vulture Peak the precious pearl is lifted out, and its brightness throws back five kinds of colour.

靈鷲峰 is Vulture Peak, the hill outside Rajagriha where the Buddha is said to have preached the Lotus Sutra — the mountain the pilgrims are still walking towards. The pearl held up in the fingers is a stock image for the teaching itself, and the five colours are the standard Buddhist set. Notice what the song has just done: three measures of pure abstraction, and then a place name you can point to on a map. The lyric has been circling, and it has just landed exactly where the pilgrims are headed.

It shines on every living thing above and below heaven and earth, and whoever knows it lives as long as the mountains and the sea.

is qián here. In the Book of Changes it names one of the eight three-line figures used for divination — the one standing for heaven — and it pairs with for earth, the two together meaning simply everything there is. Keep an ear on this character: it turns up six more times in this chapter and every one of those is gān, meaning dry, because what follows is a story about a drought. Same character, two entirely different words, and the chapter uses both.

總評 Commentary

Most chapters of this novel open with the storyteller clearing his throat — a stock phrase meaning now then, or as we were saying. This one opens with a song instead, and the effect is like a film that plays its theme music before showing you anything at all.

The song is doing a specific job. Chapter eighty-seven is about to become the most down-to-earth episode in a long stretch: no monsters, no kidnapping, no transformations to speak of. It is about a civil servant, a broken harvest and a rainfall. So the lyric front-loads the cosmic scale — the Way, the cosmos, the dark radiance, life as long as mountains — precisely so that the ordinary business that follows can be measured against it.

It also plants the chapter's real argument in its last line. Whoever knows the Way lives long. The story about to unfold turns on a man who did something thoughtless, and on the discovery that the fix is not magic but a change of heart. The song has already told you that, in the abstract, before you have met a single character.
