逐句解 Line by line
In one day the rain fell its full three chǐ and forty-two drops, and the assembled spirits gradually drew it back.
祗 is read qí here, standing for the character meaning the spirits of the earth; the edition writes one for the other, and the reading follows the sense. 下足了, fell its full measure — the edict is satisfied to the drop, and the departments stop.
The Great Sage Sun called out in a stern loud voice: "You gods of the four departments — hold your cloud-following a moment, and let Old Monkey go and fetch the prefect to thank you properly.
厲聲 is a sharp, carrying voice — the same register he used shouting at the prefect, now turned on four departments of the celestial civil service.
The rain stops exactly on the number. Three chǐ and forty-two drops, delivered and closed.
And then Pilgrim shouts at four departments of gods to wait. He has spent this chapter learning to work within the system — asking, borrowing, petitioning, yielding precedence to messengers — and the moment the job is done he is bossing heaven around in a parade-ground voice again.
What he wants them to wait for is worth noting, though. Not applause for himself. He wants to go and get the prefect so the man can thank them.
