逐句解 Line by line
The Queen really did as she was told, and called at once, "Where is Chunjiao?"
She goes along with it immediately. 真個 is the storyteller's aside again — she actually did it — and it turned up in the same role a few passages back when she opened her hand. 那 is nà, pointing at someone we know.
Out from behind the screen came a jade-faced fox,
The maid is not a woman. 玉面狐狸 is a fox spirit with a face like polished jade, and the phrase turns up twice in this chapter, both times for this one attendant. 屏風 is the folding screen every Chinese bedchamber had, which is why there is someone standing behind it.
who knelt and said, "My lady called for Chunjiao. What does she require?"
She speaks about herself in the third person, by name, which is the correct servant's register. 使令 is what a superior sends you to do — an order, an errand.
The Queen said, "Go and have them light the gauze lanterns and burn the borneol and musk,
腦 here is short for borneol, the camphor crystal burnt as incense, and 麝 is musk. Both are expensive, both are what you burn to make a room ready for a man, and the queen is ordering them with a monkey listening.
"help me out to the front hall, and invite the Great King to his rest."
安寢 is the polite word for going to bed, the one you would use of a ruler. She is issuing the invitation Pilgrim asked her to issue, in the language of a court she no longer belongs to.
The plan starts working immediately, and the speed is the point. Wukong asked for a personal maid to copy; four characters later the queen is calling one by name. There is no hesitation written anywhere in this passage, which is either courage or three years of practice at doing what she is told.
The maid who comes out from behind the screen is a fox. That is worth pausing on: the queen's private attendant, the one close enough to dress her and walk her to bed, is one of the monsters. Her household is entirely staffed by the thing holding her prisoner, and the text mentions it in passing, as a physical description, without comment.
The orders themselves are pure court routine — gauze lanterns, borneol and musk on the burners, an escort to the front hall, an invitation to bed. Every one of them is a wife's evening duty performed correctly. Every one of them is also a step in a plan to kill her husband, and the sentence does not distinguish.
