逐句解 Line by line
The fiend king took them and walked straight out of the cave.
Eight characters. 了 is the neutral le, and 就 is straight away — he does not look at what he is carrying.
The Queen sat in the palace, tears falling like rain, wondering whether Pilgrim could possibly escape with his life.
量 is liáng in 思量, the deliberative verb — to turn a thing over in the mind. 得 is de here, the potential — whether he can manage to escape — against the dé of 只得 in the passage just before.
Neither of them knew the bells were false.
Ten characters, and the narrator steps forward to say it outright. 俱 is the classical all, both of them; 不 keeps bù before the level tone of 知.
淚如雨下 — tears falling like rain — is a stock phrase, and putting it here does something quietly cruel. The queen has just done the one thing she was afraid of, handed over what she believes is a weapon that will kill her rescuer, and the text gives her a set piece of grief rather than a thought.
Then the narrator ends the block with ten characters of plain statement: 兩人卻俱不知是假鈴也 — neither of them knew the bells were false. It is addressed entirely to the reader. Both people in the scene are wrong about the same object, in opposite directions, and only we can see it.
One character appears in this passage and the one before it with different values. 只得 is had no choice but to, and takes one reading; 逃得性命 is could he manage to escape, and takes another. Two 得 in adjacent passages, doing two different jobs.
