逐句解 Line by line
The Queen called, "Set out wine to ease the Great King's labours."
She opens the trap herself, and dresses it as care. 解 is jiě, to loosen or relieve — 解勞 is to take the weariness out of someone after a hard day.
The fiend king laughed and said, "Just so, just so.
Eight characters, and he is already agreeing twice over. The doubled 正是 is a stock way of showing eagerness in this novel — the speaker is not thinking, he is nodding.
"Bring wine quickly, and I shall drink with my lady to settle her fright."
壓驚 is to press down a fright — the drink you give someone after a bad shock. He thinks he is comforting her about the burglary. 將 is jiāng, the disposal marker.
The false Chunjiao at once joined the other fiends in laying out fruits, dressing some raw meat, and setting the tables and chairs in place.
Two readings that the automatic default gets wrong and right by accident. 鋪 is pū, to lay out — 康熙 金部七畫 opens at 普胡切, 音𥠵 with 廣韻 𨻰也，布也 and 《禮·樂記》鋪筵席，𨻰尊俎; the shop reading is a later band. 調 is diào here, the band of selecting and deploying — 玉篇 選調也 — which is what you do to furniture.
The plan needs a first move and the queen makes it without being prompted. 解勞 is a wife's word — take the tiredness out of him — and the fiend hears exactly that. He answers by proposing a drink to settle her nerves after the burglary, which means both of them are now pouring wine for reasons the other does not know.
酒 appears twelve times in this chapter and five of them are in this stretch alone, with another four in the passage where Wukong laid out the plan. The word is doing a great deal of work for a chapter about a magic bell.
The last line is the disguise going to work. The false Chunjiao does not lurk or watch; he lays out fruit, dresses the meat and moves the furniture, alongside the household he intends to destroy. Nothing in the sentence marks him out. He is just one more pair of hands at the party.
