正说处,只听得地藏王菩萨道:「且住,且住。
Just as they were speaking, they heard the Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha say: "Hold, hold.
正說處: 處 here means the point at which, not a place, and takes chù. 聽得 takes dé, managing to hear. 地藏 takes zàng.
等我著諦聽與你聽個真假。」
等我着谛听与你听个真假。」
Let me set Diting to listen out the true and false for you."
著 is zhuó, setting somebody to a task — have Diting listen — the same reading as 著人飛報 a few passages back. 諦聽, Diting, means True Hearing, and it is the beast's actual name.
Kṣitigarbha was fetched at the tail of the Ten Kings' roll-call, tacked on by a single 又, and he is the only figure in the underworld who contributes anything. His intervention comes at the moment the case has already been dismissed — 且住,且住, hold on, hold on — and it proposes a completely new faculty.
Every court so far has been asked to see. Diting listens. Turning from sight to hearing is the chapter's first real change of method, and it is the one that works: the beast will identify the impostor correctly within a few dozen characters. What it will not do is say so out loud, which turns out to be a different problem altogether.
