六耳獼猴 The Six Eared Macaque
Line by line
"These four monkeys do not enter into the kinds of the ten classes, and are not reached by the names of the two realms.
兩間 takes jiān, the space between heaven and earth — so the four monkeys are not merely off the list but outside the naming of the cosmos altogether. 種 takes zhǒng.
As I observe him, the false Wukong is a Six-Eared Macaque.
Eleven characters, and they answer the question the whole chapter has been asking. 觀 takes guān, to observe.
If this monkey stands in one place, he can know affairs a thousand lǐ away; and whatever a man says, he can know that too.
Here is how the substitution was possible. 一處 takes yí before 處, which is chù. A Ming lǐ runs to roughly half a kilometre, so the macaque's hearing reaches about five hundred kilometres in any direction, and picks up anything anyone says inside it.
我觀假悟空乃六耳獼猴也 settles a question that five courts and four and a half thousand characters could not, and it is eleven characters long. The Buddha names him and moves on. No demonstration, no test, no appeal to evidence. The identification follows from the taxonomy, and the taxonomy was the thing nobody else had.
不達兩間之名 is the deeper claim. The four monkeys are not merely uncatalogued; they fall outside the naming of the space between heaven and earth. That is why the Register of Life and Death held nothing about him, why the demon mirror showed only what was standing in front of it, and why the fillet spell — which binds one named person — worked on both heads.
The two abilities given here are the imposture explained. He can know what is happening five hundred kilometres away, and he can know whatever anybody says. That is how a creature came to be waiting at the exact moment Wukong was expelled, knowing the grievance, the party and the road, and able to reproduce a voice. 綽著口氣 — Wukong's own guess before the Lords of Darkness, that the fiend snatched up the drift of his complaint — turns out to have been very nearly right.
