駕風而至 Eight Rules Returns

Just as they were making their thanks, they heard a wild wind come rolling up out of the east, and Pig Eight Rules arrived riding the wind with two bundles on his back.

背著 pairs 背 as bèi with 著 as zhe, keeping the carrying going. The thread parked with 不題 long ago is picked up here without a word of transition.

The idiot saw the Bodhisattva, threw himself down and bowed: "Your disciple took leave of our master the other day and went to the Water-Curtain Cave on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit to fetch back the bundles. Sure enough there was a false Tang Monk and a false Eight Rules, and your disciple struck them both dead — they turned out to be two monkey bodies.

倒身 takes dǎo, to throw oneself down, where the automatic reading gives dào. Both readings of 子 stand in this one sentence: 獃子 takes the flat zi, 弟子 takes the fuller zǐ.

卻què入rù裡lǐ，方fāng尋xún著zháo包bāo袱fú，當dāng時shí查chá點diǎn，一yí物wù不bù少shǎo，卻què駕jià風fēng轉zhuǎn此cǐ。却què入rù里lǐ，方fāng寻xún着zháo包bāo袱fú，当dāng时shí查chá点diǎn，一yí物wù不bù少shǎo，却què驾jià风fēng转zhuǎn此cǐ。

Then I got inside, and only then found the bundles. I checked them over at the time and not one thing was missing, so I rode the wind back here.

尋著 takes zháo, managed to find — which answers Sha Monk's 尋不著, could not manage to find, at the cave. 查點 takes chá; 當時 takes dāng.

But I do not know how it went with the two Pilgrims."

He has been off-stage for the whole of the chapter's resolution and is the last to hear about it.

總評 Commentary

Eight Rules comes back with the luggage and, characteristically, has no idea that anything has been settled. He was sent off on a burglary while both Wukongs were in the underworld, and he has been carrying out his errand in perfect ignorance of the Buddha, the taxonomy and the killing.

His report also closes the practical plot. 一物不少 — not one thing missing — means the travel rescript is recovered and the pilgrimage can legally proceed. The false Tang Monk and false Eight Rules are dead and, like the false Sha Monk earlier, turn back into monkey bodies: they were hairs all along.

尋著包袱 is a small verbal satisfaction. Sha Monk's failure at the Water-Curtain Cave was 尋不著行李, could not manage to find the luggage, and Eight Rules, who knew where the door was, reports 方尋著包袱 with the same character for managing it. The novel closes the loop with one syllable.
