Into the Pack of Fiends

Commentary
The two converging lines of the chapter finally meet: the truant Eight Rules, blundering along in ill luck, walks straight into Silver-Horn’s patrol. His instinct is concealment — he claims to be a mere traveler — but the demons carry the very apparatus foretold, and one of the little fiends matches him to the portrait Golden-Horn drew from memory.
The moment the portrait is hung up, the trap the whole chapter has been assembling closes. Eight Rules’s dismayed recognition — “no wonder I’ve felt out of sorts, it’s that he had my very likeness brought here” — completes the chain begun in the demons’ cave: the hunt by painted image, warned of by the disguised Merit-Officer, now catches its intended prey.
