毒魔狠怪 Fell Fiends and Savage Monsters

In a stern, loud voice he called to the Elder: “You there, monk journeying west — halt a moment; I have a word to offer you. On this mountain is a pack of venomous fiends and savage monsters that feed on none but you travelers passing east and west.”

奉告 (fèng gào), "to respectfully inform." 一夥 (yì huǒ), "a band, a pack." 長老/那 — 長 zhǎng, 那 nà.

Hearing this, the Elder was scared out of his wits; trembling, he could not sit steady in his carved saddle. Quickly he turned his head and hastily called to his disciples: “Did you hear that woodcutter’s report — ‘On this mountain are venomous fiends and savage monsters’? Who dares go and question him closely?”

魂飛魄散 (hún fēi pò sàn), "the souls fly and the spirits scatter" — utterly terrified. 雕鞍, "carved saddle." 長 zhǎng, 那 nà.

行xíng者zhě道dào：「師shī父fù放fàng心xīn，等děng老lǎo孫sūn去qù問wèn他tā一yí個gè端duān的dì。」行xíng者zhě道dào：「师shī父fù放fàng心xīn，等děng老lǎo孙sūn去qù问wèn他tā一yí个gè端duān的dì。」

Said Pilgrim: “Set your mind at ease, Master. Let Old Sun go and get the whole truth of it from him.”

端的 (duān dì), "the real truth, the ins and outs." 的 here read dì.

總評 Commentary

The warning delivered, the Tang Monk collapses into his habitual terror — “scared out of his wits,” unable to keep his seat — while Pilgrim, unmoved, volunteers to interrogate the stranger. The contrast is the fixed engine of these episodes: the master’s fear generates the occasion, and the monkey’s fearlessness carries the action.

The woodcutter’s words plant the episode’s stakes precisely — a “pack of venomous fiends and savage monsters” that eat travelers — while withholding the crucial detail (the two demon-kings and their five treasures) that the coming exchanges will draw out. The economy is characteristic: the danger is announced in general before it is specified.
