Old Hog Goes to Patrol

Eight Rules took fright: “That’s hard, hard, hard! Attending and supporting are no trouble at all; even carrying him on my back without leaving his side would still be easy. But suppose you send me down to the villages to beg — on these western roads they will not know me for a scripture-seeking monk, but take me for some half-grown fat hog come out of the hills; a crowd of them will gang up with pitchforks and brooms, surround Old Hog and knock him down, haul him home to be slaughtered, and salt him away for the New Year. Would that not be the death of me?”

總評 Commentary
The steering works, but not through the attendance-duties Pilgrim expected — Eight Rules balks instead at the begging, spinning an elaborate comic nightmare in which the western villagers mistake him for a fat hog, mob him with farm tools, and salt him away for the New Year. The fantasy of his own slaughter is characteristic Eight Rules: vivid, self-pitying, and very funny.
Presented with the mountain-patrol as the lesser evil, Eight Rules pronounces it “a small matter” and sets off with a great show of valor — hitching his robe, brandishing his rake, striding boldly up the road. The bravado is transparent, as the next passage will make plain; Pilgrim has read him exactly.
