Said Pilgrim: “If he be a sky-fiend, I deliver him to the Jade Emperor; if an earth-fiend, to the Earth Bureau.

解與 (jiè yǔ), "to deliver up to." 解 read jiè; 土府, "the Earth Bureau."

西xī方fāng的de歸guī佛fó，東dōng方fāng的de歸guī聖shèng；北běi方fāng的de解jiè與yǔ真zhēn武wǔ，南nán方fāng的de解jiè與yǔ火huǒ德dé。西xī方fāng的de归guī佛fó，东dōng方fāng的de归guī圣shèng；北běi方fāng的de解jiè与yǔ真zhēn武wǔ，南nán方fāng的de解jiè与yǔ火huǒ德dé。

Those of the West go to the Buddha, those of the East to the Sage; those of the North I deliver to the Perfected Warrior, those of the South to the Fire Power.

真武 (Zhēnwǔ), the Perfected Warrior, lord of the north; 火德, the Fire Power, of the south. 佛 read fó; 解 read jiè.

A flood-dragon sprite I deliver to the Lord of the Sea; a haunting goblin I deliver to King Yama.

蛟精 (jiāo jīng), "flood-dragon sprite"; 鬼祟, "a skulking ghost"; 閻王, King Yama. 解 read jiè.

批文 (pī wén), "a written warrant." 連夜解著 (lián yè jiè zhe), "escorted off overnight" — 解 jiè, 著 aspectual zhe.

總評 Commentary

Challenged to say where he would send a demon, Pilgrim answers with a full cosmographic directory, sorting fiends by origin and consigning each to its proper authority: sky-fiends to the Jade Emperor, earth-fiends to the Earth Bureau, and the four directions to their tutelary powers — the Buddha in the West, the Sage in the East, the Perfected Warrior (Zhenwu) in the North, the Fire Power in the South — with flood-dragons to the Sea Lord and ghosts to King Yama.

The catalogue is a miniature map of the novel’s syncretic pantheon, in which Buddhist, Daoist, and popular divinities each hold a bureaucratic portfolio. Pilgrim’s claim to “issue a single warrant” and have a demon deported overnight is boast and cosmology at once — a comic assertion of his standing that also sketches, accurately, the administrative machinery of the Journey’s supernatural world.
