有對問的話 A Matter to Be Tested

Seeing him start back, Pilgrim beat his two wings and hurried on ahead, resumed his true form, and came before the Master.

騰兩翅 (téng liǎng chì), "to beat both wings." 現原身, "to resume one’s true form."

師shī父fù道dào：「悟wù空kōng，你nǐ來lái了le，悟wù能néng怎zěn不bú見jiàn回huí？」师shī父fù道dào：「悟wù空kōng，你nǐ来lái了le，悟wù能néng怎zěn不bú见jiàn回huí？」

Said the Master: “Wukong, you’ve come — how is it Wuneng is not yet back?”

悟能 (Wùnéng), Eight Rules’s dharma-name. 你來了 — 了 aspectual le.

行xíng者zhě笑xiào道dào：「他tā在zài那nà裡lǐ編biān謊huǎng哩lī，就jiù待dài來lái也yě。」行xíng者zhě笑xiào道dào：「他tā在zài那nà里lǐ编biān谎huǎng哩lī，就jiù待dài来lái也yě。」

Pilgrim laughed: “He’s over there cooking up his lies — he’ll be along presently.”

編謊 (biān huǎng), "to fabricate lies." 那裡 here deictic nà ("over there").

長zhǎng老lǎo道dào：「他tā兩liǎng個gè耳ěr朵duǒ蓋gài著zhe眼yǎn，愚yú拙zhuō之zhī人rén也yě，他tā會huì編biān甚shén麼me謊huǎng？又yòu是shì你nǐ捏niē合hé甚shén麼me鬼guǐ話huà賴lài他tā哩lī。」长zhǎng老lǎo道dào：「他tā两liǎng个gè耳ěr朵duǒ盖gài著zhe眼yǎn，愚yú拙zhuō之zhī人rén也yě，他tā会huì编biān甚shén么me谎huǎng？又yòu是shì你nǐ捏niē合hé甚shén么me鬼guǐ话huà赖lài他tā哩lī。」

Said the Elder: “With his two ears drooping over his eyes, he’s a dull, clumsy fellow — what lies could he invent? Here you are again, patching together some nonsense to lay against him.”

愚拙 (yú zhuō), "dull and clumsy." 蓋著 — 著 zhe; 甚麼謊/甚麼鬼話 — 甚 shén (twice). 長 zhǎng.

Said Pilgrim: “Master, you do nothing but shield him so. This is a matter that can be put to the test.”

護短 (hù duǎn), "to shield another’s faults." 對問, "to be tested by cross-question."

And he told in advance the whole of it — how the pig had burrowed into the grass to sleep, been pecked awake by a woodpecker, bowed to the rocks, and made up his tale of a Stone Mountain, a Stone Cave, an iron-plated gate, and fiends within.

睡覺 (shuì jiào), "to sleep" — 覺 jiào. 那 nà; 甚麼 — 甚 shén.

總評 Commentary

Pilgrim flies ahead, resumes his form, and reports to the master before Eight Rules can arrive — and the exchange stages, once more, the master’s characteristic misjudgment. Told that Eight Rules is off “cooking up lies,” the Elder defends the pig as too dull to invent anything and accuses Pilgrim of slandering him with concocted nonsense.

Pilgrim’s reply — that the master “does nothing but shield him,” and that this is “a matter that can be put to the test” — sets the trap for the confrontation to come. By recounting the pig’s fabrication in advance, point for point, Pilgrim ensures that Eight Rules’s report will convict him the moment he delivers it: the comedy of the next scene is guaranteed before it begins.
