Five Strokes

Commentary
With the lie exposed, Pilgrim moves to punishment, cataloguing the offense — sent to patrol a dangerous pass, the pig slept, was pecked awake, and then lied so grossly as to endanger everyone — and demands five strokes of the cudgel. Eight Rules’s plea is pure comic exaggeration: the “mourning-staff” is so heavy that a graze splits skin and a brush wrenches sinew, and five blows would kill him outright.
The haggling that follows reduces the reckoning to farce. Pilgrim drops the count to three; Eight Rules protests he could not survive half a stroke. The negotiation over the exact number of blows — like a merchant bargaining over price — deflates the disciplinary moment entirely, turning what might be a scene of authority into another set-piece of the pig’s cowardice and the monkey’s exasperated command.
