笑中有味 A Meaning in the Laugh

在傍 (zài bàng), "standing by." 嘻嘻, "snickering."

The Elder scolded: “You brazen ape! You have no least tenderness toward your brothers, but harbor a heart forever envious. You put on these roebuck tricks, these artful words and ingratiating looks, to wheedle him off on some mountain-patrol — and then stand here laughing at him.”

獐智 (zhāng zhì), "roebuck-cunning, sly tricks"; 巧言令色, "artful words and ingratiating looks"; 撮弄, "to manipulate, incite." 長 zhǎng; 甚 shén.

Said Pilgrim: “I am not laughing at him — there is a meaning in this laugh. You watch: once Zhu Eight Rules is gone, he will surely not patrol the mountain, nor dare face the fiends; he will slip off somewhere to hide a while, cook up a lie, and come back to fool us.”

躲閃 (duǒ shǎn), "to dodge, hide away." 笑中 — 中 zhōng; 往那裡去 — 那 here interrogative nǎ ("where").

Said the Elder: “How is it you know him so well?”

曉得 (xiǎo de), "to know." 長 zhǎng; 得 de.

Said Pilgrim: “I reckon this is his way. If you don’t believe it, let me follow after him and take a look, and give a listen: first, to lend a hand to his fiend-quelling; and second, to see whether he has any sincere heart to bow before the Buddha.”

估 (gū), "to reckon, guess." 降妖 (xiáng yāo), "to quell fiends" — 降 read xiáng (subdue). 拜佛 — 佛 fó.

長zhǎng老lǎo道dào：「好hǎo，好hǎo，好hǎo，你nǐ卻què莫mò去qù捉zhuō弄nòng他tā。」长zhǎng老lǎo道dào：「好hǎo，好hǎo，好hǎo，你nǐ却què莫mò去qù捉zhuō弄nòng他tā。」

Said the Elder: “Good, good, good — only do not go and play tricks on him.”

捉弄 (zhuō nòng), "to play tricks on, tease." 長 read zhǎng.

總評 Commentary

Pilgrim’s cold laugh draws a sharp rebuke from the master, who reads it as envy and cruelty toward a brother — “roebuck tricks, artful words and ingratiating looks” to send Eight Rules off and then mock him. The Elder’s moral reproach is sincere but misdirected, for he has not grasped what Pilgrim already knows.

Pilgrim explains the “meaning” in his laugh: he predicts, with complete accuracy, that Eight Rules will shirk the patrol, hide, and fabricate a report — and proposes to follow and both assist and test him. The master’s assent, with the mild caution not to “play tricks,” licenses the surveillance that drives the next stretch of the chapter, in which Pilgrim shadows Eight Rules in disguise.
