總評 Commentary

Pilgrim shakes off the officer and returns to reassure the Elder in the register of breezy understatement — “a sprite or two,” nothing to it, the local folk are merely timid — a deliberate withholding that keeps the master’s nerve from failing. The Elder, as ever, can only take him at his word and ride on.

The woodcutter’s abrupt disappearance is registered by the disciples in their characteristic voices: the Elder puzzled, Eight Rules superstitiously certain they have met “a ghost in broad daylight,” Pilgrim already suspecting the truth and going aloft to investigate. The small beat both confirms the officer’s supernatural nature and sets up the recognition that follows.
