The crowd said, "There is food, there is food. We have all brought dry provisions and fruit, flatcakes and buns with us here, which we meant for the road-cutting; let it all be brought out for you to make free with.

乾 is gān again, and 相 is xiāng. The provisions were packed for the road-cutting Pilgrim refused, and are now redirected to the labour he proposed instead.

"And once the change is made and he is at work, we will send people back to cook more and bring it out."

著 is zhuó here — to depute or send somebody — a third distinct job for this character, alongside the marker zhe and the contact-made zháo.

Eight Rules' heart filled with delight. He stripped off his black gown, threw down his nine-toothed rake, and said to them all, "Don't laugh at me. Watch old Pig do this stinking piece of work."

場 is cháng again, the episode measure. 臭功, "stinking merit," answers the 頭功, "chief merit," Tripitaka promised two passages back, a hundred and eighty-three characters earlier — and both compounds occur exactly once in the chapter.

總評 Commentary

The village's supplies were assembled for a road-cutting that never happened, and they are handed over intact for a different plan. Nothing is wasted and nobody remarks on it.

The offer of a resupply is what makes the plan workable at all. Eight Rules has just explained that a bigger body needs a bigger meal, and the crowd's answer is to promise a second round while he works.

He undresses before he transforms — gown off, rake down — and then names the job himself. 這場臭功 against Tripitaka's 這場頭功 is a single character changed, and the change is his own joke at his own expense.
