總評 Commentary

The old man stands up to ask, which is the first thing he has done standing since he opened the gate. The request has been the point of the entire evening and he gets it out in one sentence, with the reward tacked onto the end.

Pilgrim's response is not an acceptance. 承照顧了 — "much obliged for the custom" — is shopkeeper's language, what a tradesman says when an order comes in, and the bow that goes with it belongs behind a counter rather than on the road. He has answered a plea for help as though it were a piece of business.
