逐句解 Line by line
Master and disciples were still in the middle of this discussion when a mountain farmstead came into sight, not far off.
正然 marks something still going on when it gets interrupted — the "just as" of a scene cut. 論 is lùn here, to discuss.
Pilgrim said, "Good — there is somewhere to stay."
Both 了 are the little completion marker le, and each needs its own instruction to the transcriber because the character occurs twice in one short line.
The Elder asked, "Where?"
Three characters of speech, and the line still stands alone rather than being tucked into a neighbour: it names its speaker and shuts its own quotation marks, which is what keeps even the shortest replies separate. 長 is zhǎng in 長老, "elder" — senior, not long.
The farmstead turns up precisely when the argument has run out of steam, which is this book's habitual timing. No one remarks on the coincidence and the story does not ask us to.
Tripitaka's three-character question is worth noticing for how little of it there is. Pilgrim announces the find, Eight Rules says nothing, and the Elder asks only where. He has been worried for a whole scene and now wants an address, not a conversation.
