A Stench Past Bearing
Line by line
They fought on a good while longer, and before anyone marked it the east had turned white.
覺 is jué, to notice — 不覺 is "without anyone noticing." The dawn Pilgrim predicted arrives, and the text gives him no credit for it.
The creature dared not press the fight, but turned its head and ran.
戀戰 is to cling to a fight past the point where it is worth having — exactly what Pilgrim said would stop happening once the sun was up.
Pilgrim and Eight Rules gave chase together, and all at once a foul air came at them and pressed close. This was the Thin Persimmon Lane of Seven Perfections Hill.
得 in 聞得 is the full verb dé. The lane was described to them on their first evening and this is the first time they actually meet it.
Eight Rules said, "Whose privy is being dredged out here? Ugh! The stink is past bearing."
哏 stands as a single character with its own full stop — a bare grunt of disgust, so it joins its neighbours rather than standing alone, and the four-character tail that shuts the quotation folds in after it. 難 is the adverb nán.
Pilgrim covered his nose and only called, "After the demon, quick! After the demon!"
著 is the marker zhe. The doubled shout is the same shape as the knocking at the gate, and here it is being used to stop a subject being discussed.
The creature bolted over the hill and showed its true form: a great red-scaled python.
攛 is to shoot or bolt. 現了本像 — "showed its original shape" — is the standard formula by which this book ends a creature's disguise.
Dawn comes exactly when Pilgrim said it would and the text gives him no credit whatever. The creature runs, the two of them follow, and the chase leads straight into the obstacle the whole first half of the chapter was spent describing.
The smell reaches them before the lane is named, which reverses the order of the old man's account — he named the place first and explained the smell afterwards. Eight Rules reacts in one character and then in four. His 哏 is the only single-character unit anywhere in this chapter's three hundred and forty.
Then the disguise ends. Everything the villagers reported — the wind, the eating, the two lamps in the air, the spear with no shaft — resolves into one animal, and the resolution takes nineteen characters.
