Of the seven or eight hundred who had come to see them off and were following along, rather more than half had mules or horses and went back to the village like shooting stars to cook; and there were still three hundred on foot who stood at the foot of the hill and watched him go from a distance.

Two balanced halves of one sentence, cut by a semicolon and rejoined: a count, a 的, and what they did, on each side. 還 is hái, and 行 is xíng in all three of its appearances.

It turned out that it was thirty li and more from the village to the hill, and thirty li and more again to go back for the food, so that the round trip cost something like a hundred li of delay — by which time master and disciples were well away.

擔 is dān in 擔擱, to delay, where the same character three segments back was the noun dàn, a carrying-pole load. 得 is the light particle in 去得遠.

總評 Commentary

The passage does arithmetic on the escort and arrives at an unhappy figure. Thirty li out, thirty li back, something like a hundred li of delay all told — and the party they are feeding never stops moving while they do it.

Splitting the crowd by transport is a small piece of realism the chapter did not have to supply. Those with mules ride for the food; the three hundred on foot can only stand at the bottom of the hill and watch.

遙望他行 — standing at the foot of the hill, watching him go from a distance. That is the last the village sees of the four of them for two days.
