Seeing Eight Rules changed like this, Sun Pilgrim at once ordered the escort to push the dry provisions and the rest quickly into one heap, and told him to fall to.
攢 is cuán, to gather into a mass — pinned corpus-wide, because automatic transcription supplies an unrelated reading every time. 將 is the object-hauling jiāng.
The idiot made no distinction between raw and cooked but swallowed the lot at a sweep, and then went forward to root the road.
一澇 is to take the lot at one scoop. 分 is fēn, to tell apart.
Pilgrim told Sha Monk to bare his feet and mind the luggage carefully, and asked the master to sit firm in his carved saddle.
Two dispositions in one sentence, cut by a semicolon and rejoined: a verb of directing, a person and an instruction on each side. 擔 is dàn, the noun — a load on a carrying pole.
He too pulled off his boots, and instructed the crowd as they went back, "If you have any feeling for us, send some food out quickly to keep my brother's strength up."
The boots are named with a rare character that many fonts will not render. It reads wēng, and the 1716 dictionary glosses it under the leather radical as the shaft of a boot, in the usage of the Wu region — southern dialect, recorded and preserved.
Pilgrim's first act after the transformation is catering and his second is logistics. The provisions go into one heap, Sha Monk takes the luggage, Tripitaka is put in the saddle, and the marching order is set in two sentences.
The eating gets four characters and no ceremony. Raw and cooked together, taken at one sweep, and then straight to work. The appetite that was a problem all through the chapter is now the engine driving it.
That Pilgrim and Sha Monk both take their shoes off is the detail that fixes the scene. They are about to walk a road made of three years of rotted fruit, and the only one of the four who will be above it is the man who was weeping an hour ago.
