How much road there might be from here, and what demons they would meet, is not known: listen to the next chapter, and it will be explained.
還 is hái both times, and 甚 is the question-word shén. The storyteller's closing formula, unchanged from chapter to chapter throughout the book.
The chapter ends on the formula it is obliged to end on, and the two questions it raises are the two the chapter has just spent five thousand characters answering in miniature: how far, and what is in the way.
What the closing lines do not mention is worth noticing. No demon was defeated by force in the end. The thing that actually stopped the pilgrimage was fruit, and it was removed by a pig with a full stomach.
