Eight Rules said when he heard it, "Brother, the rest of you all want to keep yourselves clean. Why must old Pig alone be sent out to stink?"

is gān in 乾淨, clean — automatic transcription gives the qián of the trigram. 哥哥 takes an unstressed second syllable.

Tripitaka said, "Wuneng, if you really have the skill to root the lane open and lead me over the hill, this chief merit shall be recorded to you."

is cháng here — the reading it takes when it counts an episode rather than naming a place. is to enter something in a register, so what is being offered as a reward is a line in a book.

Eight Rules laughed and said, "Master above me and all you patrons here — do not laugh at me.

休笑話, "don't laugh at me," is said twice by Eight Rules in this scene — once before he strips and once after.

總評 Commentary

Eight Rules objects on grounds of fairness and the objection is exactly right. Everybody else's interest in the lane is getting through it clean; his part is to be the one who goes into it.

Tripitaka answers with a promise of credit, and he reaches for the very word Eight Rules used in the middle of the night — the chief merit, which he complained of the monkey walking off with. It is offered as a line in a ledger.

And it works immediately. Two segments after objecting that the job is unfair, he is asking the company not to laugh at him — which is a complaint of an entirely different kind.
