A little demon on the gate came in to report: "It is our own lord, with that thunder-god-snouted fellow of yesterday and a monk with a long snout and great ears, fighting the local god of the Fiery Mountain and all his crowd."
The little gatekeeper knows nobody's name, so he describes all three by their faces. 雷公嘴, the thunder god's beaked snout, is the standard epithet for the Great Sage. 長嘴 takes 長 at cháng, long, against the zhǎng of 金錢長 in the verse seven lines back. 哩 holds at li.
The Jade-Faced Princess heard it and at once ordered the headmen of the outer guard, great and small, each to take up spear and blade and lend their strength.
外護 are the retainers who guard the outside of the establishment, as against the household within. The Princess acts without consulting anyone, and this is the first thing she has done in the whole sequence that is not a reaction to being deceived.
The little gatekeeper's report is a small masterpiece of limited knowledge. He identifies all three by their faces because he has no names for them: our lord, that thunder-god-snouted fellow from yesterday, and a monk with a long snout and big ears. The reader supplies the names the speaker cannot.
昨日那雷公嘴漢子 is doing quiet work. The Great Sage was at this cave yesterday wearing the Bull King's face, and the gatekeeper does not connect the two; what he remembers is a separate visit. The household's picture of events is incomplete in a way nobody inside it can correct.
The Princess acts on it at once and without consulting her husband, and this is the first initiative the novel has allowed her. Everything she has done until now has been a response to a deception practised on her.
