The two of them led the local god and the shadow-troops forward together, plying the rake and swinging the rod, clang and clatter, until they had smashed the front gate of the Cloud-Touching Cave to pieces.
The novel makes the noise audible: 乒乒乓乓, four characters of clang and clatter dropped into the middle of a sentence about rake and rod. 打得粉碎 takes the light linking de, hooking the verb to its result. 領著 takes the zhe that keeps the leading going. (一 shifts to yì in 一齊, before a rising tone, and to yí in 一座, before a falling one.)

The Bull King's establishment is being dismantled from the outside in, and each stage is registered by whoever happens to be standing there.
