滿眼垂淚 Her Eyes Full Of Tears

The Bull King had only just run in, panting, and was telling the Rākṣasī the whole business of contending with Pilgrim Sun for the fan.

方 marks that he had only that moment arrived, and the timing is exact and comic: the gate comes down while he is still getting his breath back. 喘噓噓 doubles the panting character after the verb.

聞wén報bào，心xīn中zhōng大dà怒nù，就jiù口kǒu中zhōng吐tǔ出chū扇shàn子zi，遞dì與yǔ羅luó剎chà女nǚ。闻wén报bào，心xīn中zhōng大dà怒nù，就jiù口kǒu中zhōng吐tǔ出chū扇shàn子zi，递dì与yǔ罗luó刹chà女nǚ。

Hearing the report he was greatly angered within, and spat the fan out of his mouth and handed it to the Rākṣasī.

This is the fan coming back out of the mouth it went into ten passages ago, when he swallowed it for safe keeping. He gives it away at the moment of greatest anger, which is not what anger usually produces. Both 中 take zhōng.

羅luó剎chà女nǚ接jiē扇shàn在zài手shǒu，滿mǎn眼yǎn垂chuí淚lèi道dào：「大dà王wáng，把bǎ這zhè扇shàn子zi送sòng與yǔ那nà猢hú猻sūn，教jiào他tā退tuì兵bīng去qù罷ba。」罗luó刹chà女nǚ接jiē扇shàn在zài手shǒu，满mǎn眼yǎn垂chuí泪lèi道dào：「大dà王wáng，把bǎ这zhè扇shàn子zi送sòng与yǔ那nà猢hú狲sūn，教jiào他tā退tuì兵bīng去qù罢ba。」

The Rākṣasī took the fan in her hand and said with her eyes full of tears: "Great King, give this fan to the ape and let him withdraw his troops."

The first thing the Rākṣasī has done since she was robbed, and what she asks for is surrender. She has held this fan before, given it up to a trick, and now proposes to give it up on purpose. 罷 is the sentence-ending ba, not the verb bà.

總評 Commentary

The timing is exact and it is comic. The Bull King has just this moment got inside, is still out of breath, and is in the middle of telling his wife the whole story of the fight when the front gate comes down. He does not get to finish this account either.

口中吐出扇子 is the fan coming back out of the mouth it went into ten passages ago. He swallowed it to keep it safe and he brings it up in a moment of rage, and the gesture is the chapter's plainest image of a thing that cannot be held on to.

What the Rākṣasī says is the most sensible speech anyone makes in this chapter. Give it to him and let him take his army away. She has held this fan, lost it to a trick, and got it back; she is the only party to the quarrel who has learned anything from it, and she is overruled in the next line.
