四面圍繞 Ringed On Every Side
Line by line
He met Eight Rules pounding at the door with the rake; the old bull did not stop to talk but drew and cut at his head.
更不打話 — no talk this time, after a chapter of nothing but. 遇著 takes 著 at zháo. This edition has no precedent for the frame, and the reading follows the analogy of 搧著 and 燒著, where the character marks that the action connected: to run into somebody is something achieved, not a state kept up, which is what the zhe of 坐著 or 迎著 would say.
Eight Rules raised the rake to meet it, gave back a few steps, and came out at the door, where the Great Sage was already swinging the rod overhead.
迎著 takes the zhe that keeps the meeting going, and 倒退 takes 倒 at dào, backwards — the second reading of that character in nine lines, against the dǎo of 築倒. 當頭 takes dāng.
The Bull Demon at once rode a wild wind, sprang clear of the cave, and they were all locked together again on Emerald Cloud Mountain.
相持 takes 相 at xiāng, "each other", not the xiàng of 相貌, appearance. It is the second time in the chapter this character has had to be pulled back from the appearance sense, the other being 苦相求 in the alchemical poem.
The many gods ringed him about on four sides, and the local god's troops attacked from left and right.
Four characters against four, and between them they close every direction. The fight has become an operation rather than a duel, and the verse that follows will say so.
更不打話 is a small landmark. This chapter has been made of talk — grievances stated, proverbs traded, verses answered with verses, four separate speeches about who wronged whom — and here the Bull King comes out of his door and does not say anything at all.
The fight that follows is no longer a duel. 眾多神四面圍繞,土地兵左右攻擊 puts the celestial host on four sides and the local troops on two more, and the arithmetic that settled the last engagement is simply repeated at larger scale. What the verse has to describe is an operation.
