The tale turns to Tripitaka and Sha Monk, who stood a while and sat a while, watching for Pilgrim; he had not come back this long time, and how anxious they were.

The chapter returns to the master exactly where it left him, and the first thing it reports is that he has been standing up and sitting down. 立一會坐一會 repeats the phrase to mean an indefinite alternation. ( shifts to at both, before the falling tone of .)

Of a sudden they saw auspicious cloud filling the sky and lucky light covering the ground, drifting and floating: it was the host of gods drawing near. The elder took fright and said: "Wujing, whose divine soldiers are those coming yonder?"

He cannot tell rescue from threat. 行將近 takes at jiāng marking imminence, about to — against the jiàng of a general that the same character takes at 天將 in the verse. 壁廂 is the everyday word for a side or quarter. 長老 takes at zhǎng, the elder.

總評 Commentary

The chapter returns to Tripitaka exactly where it left him, and the first thing it reports is that he has been standing up and sitting down. 立一會坐一會 is the whole of what the master has done while a demon king was hunted across four compass points by two celestial establishments.

What he does when the host arrives is take fright. 那壁廂是誰神兵來也 — whose divine soldiers are those? He cannot tell rescue from threat, which is the condition he has been in for the whole journey and which the next passage exists to correct.
