賣錢買點心 Sell It And Buy Cakes
Line by line
Eight Rules shouted: "You wretched creature, you know neither high nor low.
不知高低 is to have no sense of rank or proportion, and it is a charge about manners rather than about the request itself. 喝 is hè inside the frame 喝道.
"Sparing your life was enough. What fan is there still to ask for?
The argument is that a life is payment enough, which is not what anyone promised her. 甚麼 takes the question word shén and 還 the adverb hái, "still" — the third reading of these two characters in as many lines.
"We shall carry it over the mountain. May we not sell it for money and buy ourselves something to eat?
This is the most Eight Rules sentence in the chapter. A treasure that controls a mountain of fire, fought over for three chapters by two demon households and the entire celestial bureaucracy, and his first thought about keeping it is resale value and cakes.
"We have spent all this spirit and strength on it, and are we to hand it over to you?
又肯與你 puts the objection as a rhetorical question about desert: they earned it and she did not. It is a reasonable position, and it is about to be overruled by the two members of the party who have actually promised her something.
"The rain is coming down in a drizzle. Will you not go home?"
濛濛 doubles for a fine persistent rain, and 哩 holds at li. The dismissal is made kindly and it is still a dismissal: he is telling her to go and stand in the wet somewhere else.
Eight Rules objects, and his case is not absurd. They fought for it, she lost, sparing her life was already a concession, and there is no obligation to hand back a prize. It is the reasoning of somebody who was not present when the promise was made.
不會賣錢買點心吃 is the line that gives him away, and it is very funny. A treasure that governs a mountain of fire, contested through three chapters by two demon households, four Vajras, a Heavenly King and the Jade Emperor's establishment — and what occurs to Eight Rules is that it might fetch something and he could buy cakes.
He ends by telling her to go home out of the rain, which is the only kindness in the speech and is still a dismissal.
