Sha Monk knew them and said: "Master, those are the four great Vajras, the Golden-Headed Guardian, the Six Jia and Six Ding, the Guardians of the Faith and the gods that pass by.
Sha Monk has been off the page for the whole chapter, left behind to keep the master company, and his one function here is to be the party member who can name a celestial host on sight. 伽 in 伽藍 is qié, the third occurrence in the chapter. 認得 takes 得 at dé.
"The one leading the ox is Third Prince Nezha, the one holding the mirror is Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li, eldest brother has the banana-leaf fan in his hand, second brother and the local god come behind, and the rest are all guardian soldiers."
An identification parade, each figure named by what he is carrying — the one leading the ox, the one holding the mirror, the one with the fan. The fan is named third, in the hand of 大師兄, and its position in the list is the point of the sentence. 執著 takes the zhe that keeps the holding going.
Sha Monk gets his one function in the chapter and performs it exactly. He has been left behind since the twelfth passage to keep the master company, and what he turns out to be for is naming a celestial host on sight, in order, without hesitation.
The identification parade lets the reader see the procession from outside for the first time. Sixteen passages have been spent inside the pursuit; here it is a line of figures crossing the sky, each identified by what he is carrying — the one leading the ox, the one holding the mirror, the one with the fan.
That last is the point of the sentence. 大師兄執著芭蕉扇 is the fan's third appearance in the Great Sage's hands, and this time it is reported by somebody else, at a distance, as a fact about a procession.
