總評 Commentary

還變做一隻大白牛 — the same shape as before. Six shapes in the chase and his own ox body, and now the ox body again — a repetition; he has nothing left to invent, and the novel marks it with a single adverb.

The two clauses that follow are six and seven characters and each stands on its own. 天王使刀來砍隨後孫行者又到。 After five passages of rhapsody the fighting is reported at the speed of a chronicle.

The Great Sage's arrival is the quiet point. He has pursued this creature through six shapes, a cosmic body, four compass points and a siege, and when he finally reaches the fight he does nothing at all. The next two passages belong to a boy with a sword.
