逐句解 Line by line
Excellent Demon King! He strode out, quitted the study, went up into the great hall, took down his armour and buckled it on.
好魔王 is the storyteller's admiring exclamation — the same formula the novel uses of the Great Sage as 好大聖, and applied here to the other side. 拽 is zhuài, to stride or haul, not zhuāi, to fling. And 結束 in this period means to fasten your dress or gear on, not to conclude anything, which is a trap for a modern reader.
He took up a wrought-iron staff, went out at the door and called loudly, "Who is it that behaves so ill in my place?"
混鐵棍 is the Bull Demon King's weapon throughout the novel, a staff of unrefined or mixed iron. 無狀 is to be without decorum: the charge is rudeness before it is trespass.
Pilgrim, standing to one side, saw that his aspect was very different from what it had been five hundred years before.
模樣 takes mú. 傍 is páng, beside. The comparison with five hundred years ago reaches back to the sworn brotherhood of the novel's third chapter — which the Great Sage has twice tried to trade on across these two chapters, and has still not mentioned to the man himself.
The arming takes one sentence and five verbs, and the speed is the point. The Bull King has spent the preceding passages smiling, laughing, apologising and soothing; the moment he decides to go and look, he walks up to the hall and puts on full plate to do it. Nothing in the text says he expects a fight. The armour says it for him.
Pilgrim's observation closes the passage and does the work of an introduction. He has not seen this person in five hundred years, and the first thing he registers is that the man has changed. We are told, before the description even begins, that what follows is not simply ornamental. It is the measure of an interval.
