兜果邀嘗 Three Fruits Gathered

大dà聖shèng卻què有yǒu算suàn計jì：爬pá上shàng樹shù，一yì隻zhī手shǒu使shǐ擊jī子zi，一yì隻zhī手shǒu將jiāng錦jǐn布bù直zhí裰duō的de襟jīn兒er扯chě起qǐ來lái做zuò個gè兜dōu子zi等děng住zhù，他tā卻què串chuàn枝zhī分fēn葉yè，敲qiāo了le三sān個gè果guǒ，兜dōu在zài襟jīn中zhōng。跳tiào下xià樹shù，一yì直zhí前qián來lái，徑jìng到dào廚chú房fáng裡lǐ去qù。那nà八bā戒jiè笑xiào道dào：「哥gē哥gē，可kě有yǒu麼me？」行xíng者zhě道dào：「這zhè不bú是shì？老lǎo孫sūn的de手shǒu到dào擒qín來lái。這zhè個gè果guǒ子zi，也yě莫mò背bèi了le沙shā僧sēng，可kě叫jiào他tā一yì聲shēng。」八bā戒jiè即jí招zhāo手shǒu叫jiào道dào：「悟wù淨jìng，你nǐ來lái。」那nà沙shā僧sēng搬bān下xià行xíng李lǐ，跑pǎo進jìn廚chú房fáng道dào：「哥gē哥gē，叫jiào我wǒ怎zěn的de？」行xíng者zhě放fàng開kāi衣yī兜dōu道dào：「兄xiōng弟dì，你nǐ看kàn這zhè個gè是shì甚shén的de東dōng西xī？」沙shā僧sēng見jiàn了le道dào：「是shì人rén參shēn果guǒ。」行xíng者zhě道dào：「好hǎo啊a！你nǐ倒dào認rèn得de，你nǐ曾céng在zài那nǎ裡lǐ吃chī過guò的de？」沙shā僧sēng道dào：「小xiǎo弟dì雖suī不bù曾céng吃chī，但dàn舊jiù時shí做zuò捲juǎn簾lián大dà將jiàng，扶fú侍shì鸞luán輿yú赴fù蟠pán桃táo宴yàn，嘗cháng見jiàn海hǎi外wài諸zhū仙xiān將jiāng此cǐ果guǒ與yǔ王wáng母mǔ上shàng壽shòu。見jiàn便biàn曾céng見jiàn，卻què未wèi曾céng吃chī。哥gē哥gē，可kě與yǔ我wǒ些xiē兒er嘗cháng嘗cháng？」行xíng者zhě道dào：「不bù消xiāo講jiǎng，兄xiōng弟dì們men一yì家jiā一yí個gè。」大dà圣shèng却què有yǒu算suàn计jì：爬pá上shàng树shù，一yì只zhī手shǒu使shǐ击jī子zi，一yì只zhī手shǒu将jiāng锦jǐn布bù直zhí裰duō的de襟jīn儿er扯chě起qǐ来lái做zuò个gè兜dōu子zi等děng住zhù，他tā却què串chuàn枝zhī分fēn叶yè，敲qiāo了le三sān个gè果guǒ，兜dōu在zài襟jīn中zhōng。跳tiào下xià树shù，一yì直zhí前qián来lái，径jìng到dào厨chú房fáng里lǐ去qù。那nà八bā戒jiè笑xiào道dào：「哥gē哥gē，可kě有yǒu么me？」行xíng者zhě道dào：「这zhè不bú是shì？老lǎo孙sūn的de手shǒu到dào擒qín来lái。这zhè个gè果guǒ子zi，也yě莫mò背bèi了le沙shā僧sēng，可kě叫jiào他tā一yì声shēng。」八bā戒jiè即jí招zhāo手shǒu叫jiào道dào：「悟wù净jìng，你nǐ来lái。」那nà沙shā僧sēng搬bān下xià行xíng李lǐ，跑pǎo进jìn厨chú房fáng道dào：「哥gē哥gē，叫jiào我wǒ怎zěn的de？」行xíng者zhě放fàng开kāi衣yī兜dōu道dào：「兄xiōng弟dì，你nǐ看kàn这zhè个gè是shì甚shén的de东dōng西xī？」沙shā僧sēng见jiàn了le道dào：「是shì人rén参shēn果guǒ。」行xíng者zhě道dào：「好hǎo啊a！你nǐ倒dào认rèn得de，你nǐ曾céng在zài那nǎ里lǐ吃chī过guò的de？」沙shā僧sēng道dào：「小xiǎo弟dì虽suī不bù曾céng吃chī，但dàn旧jiù时shí做zuò卷juǎn帘lián大dà将jiàng，扶fú侍shì鸾luán舆yú赴fù蟠pán桃táo宴yàn，尝cháng见jiàn海hǎi外wài诸zhū仙xiān将jiāng此cǐ果guǒ与yǔ王wáng母mǔ上shàng寿shòu。见jiàn便biàn曾céng见jiàn，却què未wèi曾céng吃chī。哥gē哥gē，可kě与yǔ我wǒ些xiē儿er尝cháng尝cháng？」行xíng者zhě道dào：「不bù消xiāo讲jiǎng，兄xiōng弟dì们men一yì家jiā一yí个gè。」

But the Great Sage had a plan: he climbed the tree, worked the striker with one hand, and with the other pulled up the front of his brocade cassock to make a pouch and hold it ready; then, threading through the branches and parting the leaves, he knocked down three fruits and caught them in his lap.

擊子 (jī·zi), 子 (zi); 將 (jiāng) (disposal); 襟兒 (jīn·er), 兒 (er); 兜子 (dōu·zi) = a pouch, 子 (zi); 分葉 (fēn yè), 分 (fēn) ‘to part (the leaves),’ verb; 兜在襟中 (dōu zài jīn zhōng), 中 (zhōng).

跳tiào下xià樹shù，一yì直zhí前qián來lái，徑jìng到dào廚chú房fáng裡lǐ去qù。跳tiào下xià树shù，一yì直zhí前qián来lái，径jìng到dào厨chú房fáng里lǐ去qù。

He jumped down from the tree and came straight to the kitchen.

一直前來 (yìzhí qián lái) = came directly.

那nà八bā戒jiè笑xiào道dào：「哥gē哥gē，可kě有yǒu麼me？」那nà八bā戒jiè笑xiào道dào：「哥gē哥gē，可kě有yǒu么me？」

Bajie said with a laugh, “Brother, did you get any?”

那 (nà).

行xíng者zhě道dào：「這zhè不bú是shì？行xíng者zhě道dào：「这zhè不bú是shì？

Pilgrim said, “And what are these?

行 (xíng); 這不是 (zhè bú shì) = are these not (them)?

老lǎo孫sūn的de手shǒu到dào擒qín來lái。老lǎo孙sūn的de手shǒu到dào擒qín来lái。

Old Sun catches them the instant his hand arrives.

手到擒來 (shǒu dào qín lái) = child’s play (cf. P20).

這zhè個gè果guǒ子zi，也yě莫mò背bèi了le沙shā僧sēng，可kě叫jiào他tā一yì聲shēng。」这zhè个gè果guǒ子zi，也yě莫mò背bèi了le沙shā僧sēng，可kě叫jiào他tā一yì声shēng。」

And these fruits — let us not keep them from Sha Monk either; give him a call.”

果子 (guǒzi), 子 (zi); 莫背了 (mò bèi le), 了 (le) = don’t keep [it] from; 叫他一聲 (jiào tā yì shēng).

八bā戒jiè即jí招zhāo手shǒu叫jiào道dào：「悟wù淨jìng，你nǐ來lái。」八bā戒jiè即jí招zhāo手shǒu叫jiào道dào：「悟wù净jìng，你nǐ来lái。」

Bajie beckoned and called, “Wujing, come here.”

招手 (zhāo shǒu) = to beckon.

Sha Monk set down the baggage and ran into the kitchen: “Brother, what do you call me for?”

那 (nà); 行李 (xínglǐ), 行 (xíng); 叫我怎的 (jiào wǒ zěnde) = what do you want with me.

行xíng者zhě放fàng開kāi衣yī兜dōu道dào：「兄xiōng弟dì，你nǐ看kàn這zhè個gè是shì甚shén的de東dōng西xī？」行xíng者zhě放fàng开kāi衣yī兜dōu道dào：「兄xiōng弟dì，你nǐ看kàn这zhè个gè是shì甚shén的de东dōng西xī？」

Pilgrim opened his lap-pouch: “Brother, look — what thing is this?”

行 (xíng); 衣兜 (yī dōu) = the front-pouch of a robe; 甚的東西 (shén·de dōngxi), 甚 (shén) ‘what.’

沙shā僧sēng見jiàn了le道dào：「是shì人rén參shēn果guǒ。」沙shā僧sēng见jiàn了le道dào：「是shì人rén参shēn果guǒ。」

Sha Monk looked and said, “It’s a ginseng-fruit.”

見了 (jiàn le), 了 (le); 人參 (rénshēn), 參 (shēn).

行xíng者zhě道dào：「好hǎo啊a！行xíng者zhě道dào：「好hǎo啊a！

Pilgrim said, “Ha!

行 (xíng); 好啊 (hǎo a) — an exclamation.

你nǐ倒dào認rèn得de，你nǐ曾céng在zài那nǎ裡lǐ吃chī過guò的de？」你nǐ倒dào认rèn得de，你nǐ曾céng在zài那nǎ里lǐ吃chī过guò的de？」

So you know it — and where have you eaten it before?”

認得 (rèn·de), 得 (de); 在那裡 (zài nǎ li), 那 (nǎ) interrogative ‘where.’

Sha Monk said, “Though I never ate it, in the old days, as Curtain-Rolling Grand Marshal attending the phoenix-carriage to the Peach Banquet, I saw the immortals from over the seas present this fruit to the Queen Mother as a birthday gift.

捲簾大將 (Juǎnlián Dàjiàng), 將 (jiàng) ‘Grand Marshal’ (Sha Monk’s former celestial rank); 鸞輿 (luán yú) = the phoenix carriage; 蟠桃宴 (pántáo yàn) = the Peach Banquet; 將此果 (jiāng cǐ guǒ), 將 (jiāng) particle; 上壽 (shàng shòu) = to offer birthday felicitations.

見jiàn便biàn曾céng見jiàn，卻què未wèi曾céng吃chī。见jiàn便biàn曾céng见jiàn，却què未wèi曾céng吃chī。

See it I did; but eat it I never did.

見便曾見 (jiàn biàn céng jiàn) = as for seeing, [I] have seen — a vernacular topic-comment turn.

哥gē哥gē，可kě與yǔ我wǒ些xiē兒er嘗cháng嘗cháng？」哥gē哥gē，可kě与yǔ我wǒ些xiē儿er尝cháng尝cháng？」

Brother, might you give me a little to taste?”

些兒 (xiē·er), 兒 (er) = a little.

行xíng者zhě道dào：「不bù消xiāo講jiǎng，兄xiōng弟dì們men一yì家jiā一yí個gè。」行xíng者zhě道dào：「不bù消xiāo讲jiǎng，兄xiōng弟dì们men一yì家jiā一yí个gè。」

Pilgrim said, “No need to ask — one apiece, brothers.”

行 (xíng); 不消講 (bù xiāo jiǎng) = no need to say it; 一家一個 (yì jiā yí gè) = one each.

總評 Commentary

Where his first attempt failed, Pilgrim now applies the Earth-God’s lesson: he climbs the tree, works the metal striker, and — crucially — catches the falling fruit in the pulled-up front of his cassock, sparing it any wooden vessel or the ground. He knocks down three, one for each of the pilgrims, and brings them to the kitchen.

A grace note deepens Sha Monk: called in, he identifies the fruit at once, recalling that as 捲簾大將 (Curtain-Rolling Grand Marshal) — his rank before his fall — he had seen it presented to the Queen Mother at the Peach Banquet. The detail quietly reasserts that all three disciples are fallen celestials, and gives the lowly Sha Monk a moment of courtly memory.

Readings: the same graph 將 split within one clause — 大將 = jiàng (the military rank) against 將此果 = jiāng (the disposal particle); 認得 = de; 在那裡 = nǎ (interrogative ‘where’); and 分葉分 = fēn (‘to part,’ verb).
