菜園蔬圃 The Kitchen Garden
那行者觀看不盡,又見一層門,推開看處,卻是一座菜園:那行者观看不尽,又见一层门,推开看处,却是一座菜园:
行者笑道:「他也是個自種自吃的道士。」行者笑道:「他也是个自种自吃的道士。」
逐句解 Line by line
Pilgrim, looking on without cease, saw yet another gate; pushing it open, he found a vegetable garden:
那 (nà); 觀看不盡 (guān kàn bú jìn), verb 觀 (guān) with 不 (bú) (sandhi before 盡 (jìn)); 一層門 (yì céng mén) = another gate; 菜園 (cài yuán) = a vegetable garden.
Planted with the greens of all four seasons — spinach, celery, chard, ginger-shoots and taro;
佈種 (bù zhòng), 種 (zhòng) ‘to sow’ (the verb, not zhǒng ‘seed’); 菠芹莙薘 (bō qín jūn dá) = spinach, celery, chard; 薑苔 (jiāng tái) = ginger and moss-greens.
bamboo-shoots, yams, gourds and calabashes, and water-bamboo; scallions, garlic, coriander, leeks and shallots.
瓜瓠 (guā hù) = melons and bottle-gourds; 茭白 (jiāo bái) = water-bamboo shoots; 芫荽 (yán suī) = coriander; 韭薤 (jiǔ xiè) = chives and shallots.
Water-mallow, tong-wormwood, and bitter dock; bottle-gourd and eggplant must be set out too;
窩蕖 (wō qú) = a marsh-plant; 童蒿 (tóng hāo) = a wormwood; 苦藚 (kǔ xù) = bitter dock; 茄子 (qié·zi), 子 (zi) suffix; 須栽 (xū zāi) = must be planted.
turnip and radish buried round like sheep-heads; red amaranth, green pak-choi, purple mustard.
蔓菁 (mán jīng) = turnip; 蘿蔔 (luó bo) = radish; 羊頭埋 (yáng tóu mái) = buried round like sheep-heads; 紅莧/青菘/紫芥 (hóng xiàn / qīng sōng / zǐ jiè) = red amaranth, pak-choi, purple mustard.
Pilgrim said with a laugh, “So he’s a Daoist who plants his own and eats his own.”
行 (xíng); 自種自吃 (zì zhòng zì chī), 種 (zhòng) ‘to plant’ (the verb).
A second gate opens on a kitchen garden, catalogued in a brisk couplet-list of some two dozen vegetables and herbs — spinach and chard, gourds and leeks, dock and mustard — the homely counterpart to the flower garden’s splendour. The 賦 form persists, but the register drops to the everyday.
Pilgrim’s dry remark — that the immortal is ‘a Daoist who plants his own and eats his own’ — punctures the grandeur with peasant practicality, and quietly reminds us that even a paradise-abbey keeps a vegetable plot. Readings: 佈種/自種 種 = zhòng (the verb ‘to sow / plant,’ against the noun zhǒng ‘seed / kind’), and another 觀看不盡 → 不 (bú).
