臨行叮嚀 A Parting Caution

二èr仙xiān童tóng聞wén言yán，謹jǐn遵zūn師shī命mìng。那nà大dà仙xiān臨lín行xíng，又yòu叮dīng嚀níng囑zhǔ咐fù道dào：「我wǒ那nà果guǒ子zi有yǒu數shù，只zhǐ許xǔ與yǔ他tā兩liǎng個gè，不bù得dé多duō費fèi。」清qīng風fēng道dào：「開kāi園yuán時shí，大dà眾zhòng共gòng吃chī了le兩liǎng個gè，還hái有yǒu二èr十shí八bā個gè在zài樹shù，不bù敢gǎn多duō費fèi。」大dà仙xiān道dào：「唐táng三sān藏zàng雖suī是shì故gù人rén，須xū要yào防fáng備bèi他tā手shǒu下xià人rén囉luō唣zào，不bù可kě驚jīng動dòng他tā知zhī。」二èr童tóng領lǐng命mìng訖qì，那nà大dà仙xiān承chéng眾zhòng徒tú弟dì飛fēi昇shēng，竟jìng朝cháo天tiān界jiè。二èr仙xiān童tóng闻wén言yán，谨jǐn遵zūn师shī命mìng。那nà大dà仙xiān临lín行xíng，又yòu叮dīng咛níng嘱zhǔ咐fù道dào：「我wǒ那nà果guǒ子zi有yǒu数shù，只zhǐ许xǔ与yǔ他tā两liǎng个gè，不bù得dé多duō费fèi。」清qīng风fēng道dào：「开kāi园yuán时shí，大dà众zhòng共gòng吃chī了le两liǎng个gè，还hái有yǒu二èr十shí八bā个gè在zài树shù，不bù敢gǎn多duō费fèi。」大dà仙xiān道dào：「唐táng三sān藏zàng虽suī是shì故gù人rén，须xū要yào防fáng备bèi他tā手shǒu下xià人rén啰luō唣zào，不bù可kě惊jīng动dòng他tā知zhī。」二èr童tóng领lǐng命mìng讫qì，那nà大dà仙xiān承chéng众zhòng徒tú弟dì飞fēi升shēng，竟jìng朝cháo天tiān界jiè。

The two immortal boys, hearing this, reverently obeyed their master’s command.

謹遵師命 (jǐn zūn shī mìng) = to obey a master’s order with all deference.

那nà大dà仙xiān臨lín行xíng，又yòu叮dīng嚀níng囑zhǔ咐fù道dào：「我wǒ那nà果guǒ子zi有yǒu數shù，只zhǐ許xǔ與yǔ他tā兩liǎng個gè，不bù得dé多duō費fèi。」那nà大dà仙xiān临lín行xíng，又yòu叮dīng咛níng嘱zhǔ咐fù道dào：「我wǒ那nà果guǒ子zi有yǒu数shù，只zhǐ许xǔ与yǔ他tā两liǎng个gè，不bù得dé多duō费fèi。」

As the Great Immortal was about to set out, he charged them yet again: “My fruits are numbered — only two may be given him, no more to be spent.”

那 (nà); 臨行 (lín xíng) = on the point of departure, 行 (xíng); 那果子 (nà guǒzi), 子 (zi); 有數 (yǒu shù) = are counted / limited; 不得多費 (bù dé duō fèi), 得 (dé) ‘may.’

清qīng風fēng道dào：「開kāi園yuán時shí，大dà眾zhòng共gòng吃chī了le兩liǎng個gè，還hái有yǒu二èr十shí八bā個gè在zài樹shù，不bù敢gǎn多duō費fèi。」清qīng风fēng道dào：「开kāi园yuán时shí，大dà众zhòng共gòng吃chī了le两liǎng个gè，还hái有yǒu二èr十shí八bā个gè在zài树shù，不bù敢gǎn多duō费fèi。」

Pure-Wind said, “When the orchard was opened, the assembly ate two between them; twenty-eight yet remain on the tree. We shall not spend them freely.”

開園 (kāi yuán) = the opening of the orchard, an earlier communal tasting; 了 (le); 還有 (hái yǒu) = there remain, 還 (hái).

大dà仙xiān道dào：「唐táng三sān藏zàng雖suī是shì故gù人rén，須xū要yào防fáng備bèi他tā手shǒu下xià人rén囉luō唣zào，不bù可kě驚jīng動dòng他tā知zhī。」大dà仙xiān道dào：「唐táng三sān藏zàng虽suī是shì故gù人rén，须xū要yào防fáng备bèi他tā手shǒu下xià人rén啰luō唣zào，不bù可kě惊jīng动dòng他tā知zhī。」

The Great Immortal said, “Though Tang Tripiṭaka be an old friend, you must guard against his underlings making a rumpus — do not let them get wind of it.”

三藏 (Sānzàng), 藏 (zàng); 防備 (fángbèi) = to be on guard; 囉唣 (luōzào) = to make a clamour, cause a disturbance; 驚動他知 (jīngdòng tā zhī) = alert them to it.

二èr童tóng領lǐng命mìng訖qì，那nà大dà仙xiān承chéng眾zhòng徒tú弟dì飛fēi昇shēng，竟jìng朝cháo天tiān界jiè。二èr童tóng领lǐng命mìng讫qì，那nà大dà仙xiān承chéng众zhòng徒tú弟dì飞fēi升shēng，竟jìng朝cháo天tiān界jiè。

The two boys received their orders; and the Great Immortal, borne aloft amid his throng of disciples, rose in flight and made straight for the celestial realm.

領命訖 (lǐng mìng qì) = having received the command; 那 (nà); 飛昇 (fēishēng) = to ascend in flight; 竟朝天界 (jìng cháo tiānjiè), 朝 (cháo) ‘toward,’ 竟 (jìng) ‘straight.’

總評 Commentary

The doubled charge tightens the plot’s fuse. The fruits are strictly numbered — twenty-eight of the original thirty left on the tree after an earlier tasting — only two are permitted, and, most pointedly, Zhènyuán warns the boys to guard against the monk’s rowdy 手下人 and keep the whole matter quiet. Every one of these conditions is about to be broken.

Pure-Wind’s tidy accounting fixes the inventory that will make the coming theft both calculable and certain of discovery; the caution against 囉唣 (a servants’ rumpus) names, in advance, exactly what Pilgrim and Bājiè will provoke.

The Immortal then ascends among his disciples, leaving the abbey warned but unguarded. Points of reading: 朝 = cháo ‘toward’ in 竟朝天界, and the vernacular 囉唣.
