他tā三sān人rén將jiāng三sān個gè果guǒ各gè各gè受shòu用yòng。那nà八bā戒jiè食shí腸cháng大dà，口kǒu又yòu大dà，一yì則zé是shì聽tīng見jiàn童tóng子zǐ吃chī時shí，便biàn覺jué饞chán蟲chóng拱gǒng動dòng，卻què才cái見jiàn了le果guǒ子zi，拿ná過guò來lái，張zhāng開kāi口kǒu，轂gǔ轆lù的de囫hú圇lún吞tūn嚥yàn下xià肚dù。卻què白bái著zhe眼yǎn胡hú賴lài，向xiàng行xíng者zhě、沙shā僧sēng道dào：「你nǐ兩liǎng個gè吃chī的de是shì甚shén麼me？」沙shā僧sēng道dào：「人rén參shēn果guǒ。」八bā戒jiè道dào：「甚shén麼me味wèi道dào？」行xíng者zhě道dào：「悟wù淨jìng，不bú要yào睬cǎi他tā。──你nǐ倒dào先xiān吃chī了le，又yòu來lái問wèn誰shuí？」八bā戒jiè道dào：「哥gē哥gē，吃chī的de忙máng了le些xiē，不bú像xiàng你nǐ們men細xì嚼jué細xì嚥yàn，嘗cháng出chū些xiē滋zī味wèi。我wǒ也yě不bù知zhī有yǒu核hé無wú核hé，就jiù吞tūn下xià去qù了le。哥gē啊a，為wéi人rén為wéi徹chè。已yǐ經jīng調diào動dòng我wǒ這zhè饞chán蟲chóng，再zài去qù弄nòng個gè兒er來lái，老lǎo豬zhū細xì細xì的de吃chī吃chī。」行xíng者zhě道dào：「兄xiōng弟dì，你nǐ好hǎo不bù知zhī止zhǐ足zú。這zhè個gè東dōng西xī，比bǐ不bù得dé那nà米mǐ食shí麵miàn食shí，撞zhuàng著zháo儘jǐn飽bǎo。像xiàng這zhè一yí萬wàn年nián只zhǐ結jié得de三sān十shí個gè，我wǒ們men吃chī他tā這zhè一yí個gè，也yě是shì大dà有yǒu緣yuán法fǎ，不bù等děng小xiǎo可kě。罷bà罷bà罷bà，夠gòu了le。」他tā欠qiàn起qǐ身shēn來lái，把bǎ一yí個gè金jīn擊jī子zi，瞞mán窗chuāng眼yǎn兒er，丟diū進jìn他tā道dào房fáng裡lǐ，竟jìng不bù睬cǎi他tā。他tā三sān人rén将jiāng三sān个gè果guǒ各gè各gè受shòu用yòng。那nà八bā戒jiè食shí肠cháng大dà，口kǒu又yòu大dà，一yì则zé是shì听tīng见jiàn童tóng子zǐ吃chī时shí，便biàn觉jué馋chán虫chóng拱gǒng动dòng，却què才cái见jiàn了le果guǒ子zi，拿ná过guò来lái，张zhāng开kāi口kǒu，毂gǔ辘lù的de囫hú囵lún吞tūn咽yàn下xià肚dù。却què白bái著zhe眼yǎn胡hú赖lài，向xiàng行xíng者zhě、沙shā僧sēng道dào：「你nǐ两liǎng个gè吃chī的de是shì甚shén么me？」沙shā僧sēng道dào：「人rén参shēn果guǒ。」八bā戒jiè道dào：「甚shén么me味wèi道dào？」行xíng者zhě道dào：「悟wù净jìng，不bú要yào睬cǎi他tā。──你nǐ倒dào先xiān吃chī了le，又yòu来lái问wèn谁shuí？」八bā戒jiè道dào：「哥gē哥gē，吃chī的de忙máng了le些xiē，不bú像xiàng你nǐ们men细xì嚼jué细xì咽yàn，尝cháng出chū些xiē滋zī味wèi。我wǒ也yě不bù知zhī有yǒu核hé无wú核hé，就jiù吞tūn下xià去qù了le。哥gē啊a，为wéi人rén为wéi彻chè。已yǐ经jīng调diào动dòng我wǒ这zhè馋chán虫chóng，再zài去qù弄nòng个gè儿er来lái，老lǎo猪zhū细xì细xì的de吃chī吃chī。」行xíng者zhě道dào：「兄xiōng弟dì，你nǐ好hǎo不bù知zhī止zhǐ足zú。这zhè个gè东dōng西xī，比bǐ不bù得dé那nà米mǐ食shí面miàn食shí，撞zhuàng著zháo尽jǐn饱bǎo。像xiàng这zhè一yí万wàn年nián只zhǐ结jié得de三sān十shí个gè，我wǒ们men吃chī他tā这zhè一yí个gè，也yě是shì大dà有yǒu缘yuán法fǎ，不bù等děng小xiǎo可kě。罢bà罢bà罢bà，够gòu了le。」他tā欠qiàn起qǐ身shēn来lái，把bǎ一yí个gè金jīn击jī子zi，瞒mán窗chuāng眼yǎn儿er，丢diū进jìn他tā道dào房fáng里lǐ，竟jìng不bù睬cǎi他tā。

But Bajie, big of gullet and big of mouth, and already, from having heard the boys eating earlier, feeling the gluttony-worm astir, now that the fruit was before him took it up, opened wide, and with a gulp swallowed it whole down his throat.

食腸大 (shí cháng dà) = a great appetite; 童子 (tóngzǐ), 子 (zǐ); 便覺 (biàn jué), 覺 (jué) ‘felt’ (not the sleep-sense jiào); 饞蟲拱動 (chán chóng gǒng dòng) = the ‘gluttony-worm’ stirring; 果子 (guǒzi), 子 (zi); 囫圇吞嚥 (húlún tūn yàn) = to bolt whole.

卻què白bái著zhe眼yǎn胡hú賴lài，向xiàng行xíng者zhě、沙shā僧sēng道dào：「你nǐ兩liǎng個gè吃chī的de是shì甚shén麼me？」却què白bái著zhe眼yǎn胡hú赖lài，向xiàng行xíng者zhě、沙shā僧sēng道dào：「你nǐ两liǎng个gè吃chī的de是shì甚shén么me？」

Then, rolling his eyes white and playing dumb, he asked Pilgrim and Sha Monk: “What is it you two are eating?”

白著眼 (bái·zhe yǎn), durative 著 (zhe) (‘eyes rolled white’); 胡賴 (hú lài) = to feign ignorance; 行 (xíng); 甚麼 (shénme), 甚 (shén).

沙shā僧sēng道dào：「人rén參shēn果guǒ。」沙shā僧sēng道dào：「人rén参shēn果guǒ。」

Sha Monk said, “Ginseng-fruit.”

人參 (rénshēn), 參 (shēn).

八bā戒jiè道dào：「甚shén麼me味wèi道dào？」八bā戒jiè道dào：「甚shén么me味wèi道dào？」

Bajie said, “What does it taste like?”

甚麼 (shénme), 甚 (shén).

行xíng者zhě道dào：「悟wù淨jìng，不bú要yào睬cǎi他tā。行xíng者zhě道dào：「悟wù净jìng，不bú要yào睬cǎi他tā。

Pilgrim said, “Wujing, pay him no mind.

行 (xíng); 不要睬 (bú yào cǎi) = don’t heed.

──你nǐ倒dào先xiān吃chī了le，又yòu來lái問wèn誰shuí？」 ──你nǐ倒dào先xiān吃chī了le，又yòu来lái问wèn谁shuí？」

— you went and ate yours first, and now who are you asking?”

先吃了 (xiān chī le), 了 (le) — a jab at Bajie’s feigned ignorance.

八bā戒jiè道dào：「哥gē哥gē，吃chī的de忙máng了le些xiē，不bú像xiàng你nǐ們men細xì嚼jué細xì嚥yàn，嘗cháng出chū些xiē滋zī味wèi。八bā戒jiè道dào：「哥gē哥gē，吃chī的de忙máng了le些xiē，不bú像xiàng你nǐ们men细xì嚼jué细xì咽yàn，尝cháng出chū些xiē滋zī味wèi。

Bajie said, “Brother, I ate mine in too much haste — not like you two, chewing fine and swallowing slow, tasting out the flavour.

吃的忙了些 (chī de máng le xiē), 了 (le); 細嚼細嚥 (xì jiáo xì yàn) = to chew fine and swallow slow.

我wǒ也yě不bù知zhī有yǒu核hé無wú核hé，就jiù吞tūn下xià去qù了le。我wǒ也yě不bù知zhī有yǒu核hé无wú核hé，就jiù吞tūn下xià去qù了le。

I don’t even know if it had a stone or not — I just gulped it down.

有核無核 (yǒu hé wú hé) = whether it had a pit; 吞下去了 (tūn xiàqù le), 了 (le).

哥gē啊a，為wéi人rén為wéi徹chè。哥gē啊a，为wéi人rén为wéi彻chè。

Brother — do a kindness, and do it to the end!

為人為徹 (wéi rén wéi chè), the proverb ‘help someone all the way,’ 為 (wéi) the verb ‘to do / act.’

已yǐ經jīng調diào動dòng我wǒ這zhè饞chán蟲chóng，再zài去qù弄nòng個gè兒er來lái，老lǎo豬zhū細xì細xì的de吃chī吃chī。」已yǐ经jīng调diào动dòng我wǒ这zhè馋chán虫chóng，再zài去qù弄nòng个gè儿er来lái，老lǎo猪zhū细xì细xì的de吃chī吃chī。」

You’ve set my gluttony-worm going; go get another, and old Pig will eat it slow.”

調動 (diào dòng), 調 (diào) ‘to stir up’; 個兒 (gè·er), 兒 (er); 老豬 (lǎo zhū) = ‘old Pig’ (Bajie’s self-name).

行xíng者zhě道dào：「兄xiōng弟dì，你nǐ好hǎo不bù知zhī止zhǐ足zú。行xíng者zhě道dào：「兄xiōng弟dì，你nǐ好hǎo不bù知zhī止zhǐ足zú。

Pilgrim said, “Brother, you have no sense of enough.

行 (xíng); 不知止足 (bù zhī zhǐ zú) = to know no moderation.

這zhè個gè東dōng西xī，比bǐ不bù得dé那nà米mǐ食shí麵miàn食shí，撞zhuàng著zháo儘jǐn飽bǎo。这zhè个gè东dōng西xī，比bǐ不bù得dé那nà米mǐ食shí面miàn食shí，撞zhuàng著zháo尽jǐn饱bǎo。

This thing is not like rice or noodles, where you run into your fill.

比不得 (bǐ bù dé), 得 (dé) ‘cannot compare’; 那 (nà); 撞著 (zhuàng·zháo), resultative 著 (zháo) ‘run into’; 儘飽 (jǐn bǎo) = to one’s fill.

像xiàng這zhè一yí萬wàn年nián只zhǐ結jié得de三sān十shí個gè，我wǒ們men吃chī他tā這zhè一yí個gè，也yě是shì大dà有yǒu緣yuán法fǎ，不bù等děng小xiǎo可kě。像xiàng这zhè一yí万wàn年nián只zhǐ结jié得de三sān十shí个gè，我wǒ们men吃chī他tā这zhè一yí个gè，也yě是shì大dà有yǒu缘yuán法fǎ，不bù等děng小xiǎo可kě。

A thing like this, thirty fruits in ten thousand years — that we eat even one is a great karmic bond, no trifling matter.

只結得 (zhǐ jiē·de), light 得 (de) (‘bears only’); 大有緣法 (dà yǒu yuán fǎ) = great karmic fortune; 不等小可 (bù děng xiǎo kě) = no small thing.

罷bà罷bà罷bà，夠gòu了le。」罢bà罢bà罢bà，够gòu了le。」

Enough, enough — that will do.”

夠了 (gòu le), 了 (le) = that is enough.

他tā欠qiàn起qǐ身shēn來lái，把bǎ一yí個gè金jīn擊jī子zi，瞞mán窗chuāng眼yǎn兒er，丟diū進jìn他tā道dào房fáng裡lǐ，竟jìng不bù睬cǎi他tā。他tā欠qiàn起qǐ身shēn来lái，把bǎ一yí个gè金jīn击jī子zi，瞒mán窗chuāng眼yǎn儿er，丢diū进jìn他tā道dào房fáng里lǐ，竟jìng不bù睬cǎi他tā。

He rose, and through the window-hole tossed the golden striker back into the Daoist quarters, then paid Bajie no further heed.

擊子 (jī·zi), 子 (zi); 瞞窗眼兒 (mán chuāng yǎn·er), 兒 (er) = through the window-hole (unseen); 竟不睬 (jìng bù cǎi) = ignored him entirely.

總評 Commentary

The comic centre of the theft. Bājiè — ‘big of gullet and big of mouth,’ his appetite already whetted by overhearing the boys — bolts his fruit whole in a single gulp, tasting nothing, then rolls his eyes and feigns ignorance (‘What is it you two are eating?’). Pilgrim’s dry retort (‘you went and ate yours first, and now who are you asking?’) skewers the pretence.

Unabashed, Bājiè pleads for another — ‘do a kindness, and do it to the end’ — having, he complains, swallowed too fast to know whether it even had a pit. Pilgrim refuses with a homily on moderation: this is no bowl of rice to eat one’s fill of, but a fruit of thirty in ten thousand years, and one apiece is fortune enough. He tosses the striker back through the window and lets the matter drop.

But Bājiè’s gluttony is precisely the loose thread that unravels the theft, as the next passage shows. Readings: 童子子 = zǐ against 果子／擊子 = zi; 便覺覺 = jué (‘feel,’ not the sleep-sense jiào); 撞著著 = zháo (resultative); the light 只結得 = de; and the proverb 為人為徹為 = wéi.
