逐句解 Line by line

師shī徒tú們men沖chōng寒hán冒mào冷lěng,宿sù雨yǔ餐cān風fēng。 师shī徒tú们men冲chōng寒hán冒mào冷lěng,宿sù雨yǔ餐cān风fēng。

Master and disciples pressed on through the bitter cold, sleeping in the rain and dining on the wind.

宿雨餐風 sù yǔ cān fēng — to lodge in rain and make a meal of wind — is the set phrase for hard travelling, and it is still the one Chinese reaches for. 宿 is sù, to spend the night.

正zhèng行xíng間jiān,又yòu見jiàn一yí座zuò城chéng池chí。 正zhèng行xíng间jiān,又yòu见jiàn一yí座zuò城chéng池chí。

As they went, another walled city came into view.

正行間 zhèng xíng jiān is "right in the middle of walking" — the novel's usual way of interrupting a journey. Nine characters, and the plot restarts.

三sān藏zàng問wèn道dào:「悟wù空kōng,那nà廂xiāng又yòu是shì甚shén麼me所suǒ在zài?」 三sān藏zàng问wèn道dào:「悟wù空kōng,那nà厢xiāng又yòu是shì甚shén么me所suǒ在zài?」

Tripitaka asked, "Wukong, what place is that over there?"

那廂 nà xiāng is "that quarter," pointing rather than asking which — so 那 is nà and not the questioning nǎ.

行xíng者zhě道dào:「到dào跟gēn前qián自zì知zhī。 行xíng者zhě道dào:「到dào跟gēn前qián自zì知zhī。

Pilgrim said, "You will know when we get there.

Wukong at his most laconic. The joke is that he does not know either, and says so in a way that sounds like knowledge.

If it is the seat of a western king, we must have our travel rescript certified; if it is only a prefecture or a district, we go straight through."

The bureaucratic reflex, and it is the engine of half the novel's plots. 倒換 dào huàn — with 倒 read dào — is to exchange one document for another: at each kingdom the rescript is stamped afresh, rather like getting a visa endorsed at every border. The two clauses are built on the same frame, 若是 — if it is — which is why they are set here as a single sentence.

總評 Commentary

A small scene doing quiet work. It establishes that the pilgrims are cold, that a city is ahead, and that their business there is paperwork. Nothing prepares the reader for what the paperwork will turn into.

Wukong's answer is the most characteristic thing in the passage. Asked a question he cannot answer, he does not admit it; he supplies a procedure instead. If it is a kingdom we do this, if it is a county we do that. It is the voice of somebody who has been through eighty of these and expects to be through eighty more.
