With a snarl he ground his steel teeth, whipped out his iron cudgel, sprang down from the peak and gave the little demon one roll of the staff over the head — poor wretch, he was rolled flat into a lump of meat.

砑了一砑 is one pass of the roller — the same 砑 Pilgrim used when he described flattening forty thousand demons into mince, now applied to one. 砑得 has 得 unstressed. And 可憐 is the narrator's own two characters of pity, dropped into the middle of the sentence.

自zì家jiā見jiàn了le,又yòu不bù忍rěn道dào:「咦yí! 自zì家jiā见jiàn了le,又yòu不bù忍rěn道dào:「咦yí!

Then, looking at what he had done, he could not bear it. "Oh!"

Nine characters, and 不忍 is cannot bear it — the word for a feeling that stops you. The exclamation is a single character and it is the only sound Pilgrim makes.

總評 Commentary

The killing takes one blow and the novel gives it the same verb Pilgrim used for his boast about the whole mountain. The threat has been carried out on a sample of one.

The narrator's two characters of pity in the middle of the sentence are the point. Poor wretch — inserted by the teller, not the hero, and inserted before Pilgrim has any reaction at all.

And then the reaction comes, and it is not triumph. He looks at what he has done and cannot bear it, which is a thing this book lets him feel about four times in a hundred chapters.
