二更時也 By The Second Watch

逐句解 Line by line
Bajie said, "Brother, if it is a matter of rolling them out like dough, then by the second watch it might all be over."
趕麵 is rolling out dough with a pin, and Bajie has spotted exactly what his brother's image was. 二更 is the second night watch, roughly nine to eleven in the evening — 更 here is gēng, the watch, not the gèng of more or further, which is the reading the same character takes a few passages later.
Sha Monk laughed from the side. "Master, with an elder brother of such powers, what is there to fear? Please mount and let us be going."
在傍 is at the side, and 傍 is páng there, the same word as the modern character for beside. This is Sha Monk's first line of the chapter, twenty-six hundred characters in, and it is characteristic: he says nothing original and moves everybody along.
Seeing them arguing about their abilities, the Tang Monk had no help for it and could only take heart, mount and ride on.
沒奈何 is there being nothing to be done about it, and 寬心 is to widen the heart — to let oneself be reassured. The master has not been convinced of anything. He has run out of alternatives.
Bajie's concession is the funniest line he gets. Having spent the argument insisting on forty-eight thousand, he accepts the whole plan the moment he can picture it as kitchen work.
Sha Monk then arrives, says the obvious, and gets everybody back on the road. He has been standing there for two thousand characters without a word, and his one contribution is to end a conversation.
The master's last clause is the honest one. Not persuaded, not reassured — with nothing else to be done, widening his heart by an act of will and getting on the horse.
